What to do in a dental emergency
If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, follow these steps:

Seek immediate hospital care for severe symptoms: If you have uncontrollable pain, swelling, or bleeding, go to the nearest hospital emergency department, such as Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown.

Contact a dentist: Call a dental clinic to arrange an appointment and get advice on managing your condition until you can be seen. For other local dentist, visit Southland NZDA and check their answering service for after-hours contacts.

In the meantime: Avoid disturbing the affected area, rinse gently with warm saltwater, and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the packaging.

Our answering message will provide our dentist’s contact information. our on-call dentist can offer guidance on pain management or next steps until you can be seen.
Important: In cases of uncontrolled swelling or bleeding, please seek immediate care at the nearest hospital emergency department as soon as possible. You can still contact us for follow-up treatment or to arrange further care.
While we strive to offer guidance over the phone, in-person treatment may not always be immediately available. However, we reserve emergency appointments during the week to accommodate urgent cases. If an emergency slot is available, we’ll do our best to fit you in promptly.

What is classed as a dental emergency? Any injury to your mouth that may be life-threatening like uncontrolled bleeding, sever pain, or broken facial bones.

Can you go to a hospital for tooth pain? Hospitals can provide emergency dental treatment to help relieve the pain.

Does it matter if I’m not a registered patient? No, it doesn’t matter — we’ll do our best to assist you whether you’re a new or existing patient. While we may not always be able to see you in person immediately, we’ll try to help however we can, even if it's initially over the phone.

Do you charge extra for emergencies? No, we do not charge extra for emergency treatments during our normal operating hours — the cost is the same whether you're an existing patient or visiting us for the first time. However, if you require emergency care outside of our regular hours, a call-out fee of $250 may apply to cover the dentist and assistant coming in specifically to treat you.
